Eleven spellers from seven states made it to the championship finals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee Thursday night. But only one of them won the championship: Arvind V. Mahankali, sponsored by the New York Daily News. This was the Queens, N.Y., student's fourth appearance in the Bee; he placed third the last two years in a row.
There were 281 teens and tweens who qualified to compete in the annual event, held in Maryland.
