Federal authorities are looking at a land deal in a waterfront development in Carteret County in which former Gov. Mike Easley has purchased a lot, according to the company that marketed the property.
Easley purchased a lot in the Cannonsgate development for $549,880 at the end of 2005, according to property records. It was assessed a tax value of $1.2 million a year later, though today it would likely bring less.
Separate reports in 2006 by The Charlotte Observer and The Carolina Journal, a publication of the John Locke Foundation in Raleigh, compared the Easley sale with other lot sales nearby and concluded that Easley got a good deal when he purchased the property.
Easley's parcel in the development is one of two that border both Bogue Sound and a 75-slip marina. The former governor has said he paid the list price on the lot and got no special deal.
