WASHINGTON — A new Ipsos/McClatchy poll of Americans indicates that two thirds (62%) of Americans believe that enough (52%) or too much (10%) has been done in terms of safety improvements on US owned and operated airlines since 9/11. Just under four in 10 (38%) of respondents disagree.
Further, slightly more Americans (65%) believe that enough (50%) or too much (15%) has been done at US-owned and operated airports in terms of safety improvements and screening requirements for passengers. Just over a third (35%) of respondents disagree.
These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted September 9-10, 2008. For this survey, a national sample of 947 adults aged 18 or older from Ipsos' U.S. online panel, are interviewed online. Weighting is then employed to balance demographics and ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the actual U.S. adult population according to census data and to provide results that are intended to approximate the sample universe. An unweighted probability sample of 947 respondents, with a 100% response rate, has an estimated margin of error of +/-3.2 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
Onboard safety…
Thinking back to September 11, 2001, most Americans (62%) believe that enough (52%) or too much (10%) has been done in terms of safety improvements on US owned and operated airlines since 9/11. Just under four in 10 (38%) of respondents disagree.
Those respondents most likely to believe that enough/too much has been done in terms of safety improvements to US airlines include:
-- Men (64%) versus women (59%)-- Those aged 35-4 (65%) versus those aged 18-34 (62%) and those over the age of 55 (57%)-- In terms of region, those Americans located in the Northeast (62%) are more likely to believe this is the case then those located in the West (65%), Midwest (63%) and the South (59%).
Those least likely to believe this is the case (38%) are women (41%), those aged 55+ (42%) and those in the South (41%).
Airport Safety: Screening and Requirements for Passengers…
Similarly, slightly more (65%) Americans believe that enough (50%) or too much (15%) has been done at US owned and operated airports in terms of safety improvements and screening requirements for passengers. Just over a third (35%) of respondents disagrees.
Those respondents most likely to believe that enough/too much has been done in terms of safety improvements in screening requirements for passengers:
-- Women (66%) versus men (64 %)-- Those aged 18-34 (68%) versus those aged 35-54 (64%) and those over the age of 54 (63%)-- In terms of region, Americans in the various regions for the United States are almost equal in their views: West (67%), Midwest (66%), South (65%) and Northeast (63%)
Those least likely to believe this is the case (35%) are men (36%), those aged 55+ (36%) and those in the Northeast (37%).
