Previous flu pandemics, as reported by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases:
_1918: "Spanish flu" pandemic. H1N1 virus. Killed 20 million to 50 million people worldwide, 500,000 in the United States.
_1957-58: "Asian flu" pandemic. Virus H2N2. Killed 70,000 Americans. No one under 35 has immunity to this strain.
_1968-69: "Hong Kong flu" pandemic. Virus H3N2. Killed 34,000 Americans. This virus is still circulating and kills about 36,000 Americans yearly.
