The Group of Eight leaders from the world's top industrial democracies agreed to a number of significant steps at their annual summit, which ended Friday. Highlights:
_Global warming. They acknowledged that human activities, especially combustion of fossil fuels for energy, contribute to global warming. In a 10-page plan they listed a host of vague pledges to seek cleaner fuels and better efficiency in using energy, but set no measurable goals or timetables.
_Africa. They pledged to double international aid to Africa to $50 billion a year by 2010. They also agreed to forgive $40 billion in debts owed by 18 impoverished nations, most of them African.
_Palestinians. They pledged up to $9 billion over three years to assist the Palestinian Authority in moving toward democratic statehood.
