In cables, a more nuanced U.S. view of Iran in Iraq

Newly released diplomatic cables show that as part of its drive to counter Iranian influence in Iraq, the U.S. military targeted two senior Iranian intelligence officials in a raid in northern Iraq in 2007.When the men escaped to Iran and sought to return as diplomats, the U.S. military blocked their return by threatening to target them again.
