Pakistan plan to attack Taliban haven promises wider war

After forcing the Islamist extremists from the Swat valley, Pakistan plans a fullscale assault on Waziristan, long a sanctuary for Taliban and al Qaida leaders. Western governments believe the offensive, likely to come this summer, will be critical to weakening Islamic extremists in both Pakistan and Afghanistan. But the Taliban is likely to respond by broadening its terrorist attacks throughout Pakistan.
