Millions watched with calm — and euphoria — as history is made

As Barack Obama took the oath of office, the mood throughout the nation's capital was both electric and serene. Electric because west from the inauguration platform stretched an unbroken sea of humanity a mile and a half to the Washington monument, and beyond. Serene because despite the logistical nightmare, people rarely got angry.
