Democrat takes 800-vote lead in Alaska U.S. Senate race

Alaska's Division of Elections tallied about 60,000 absentee, early and questioned ballots from around the state on Wednesday in the race between incumbent Republican U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens and former Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich, a Democrat. The ballots broke heavily in the Democrat's favor, erasing the 3,000-vote lead Stevens had held. Begich aides said they believe the lead will hold.
