Maliki purge of top Iraqi security officials creates a storm

Critics of Prime Minister Nouri al Maliki said the dismissals of three senior Interior Ministry officials was an effort to weaken political rivals ahead of winter elections. Maliki allies, however, said the cause was serious security lapses revealed by the Aug. 19 car bombings that devastated the Iraqi Foreign Affairs and Finance ministries.
