Pope Benedict pledges respect for Native American culture at canonization of Kateri, 6 others

Tens of thousands of pilgrims, including Native Americans in tribal regalia, Hawaiians with leis and Bavarians in lederhosen, packed St. Peter’s Square on Sunday as Pope Benedict XVI canonized seven new saints, one a Mohawk who has long been an icon for Indians throughout the United States and Canada.
