Israeli troops cut Gaza in two in 'real war' to crush Hamas

On the first full day of Israeli ground operations following an eight-day air assault, Israeli infantry units seized large sections of Gaza, encircled its largest city and severed the narrow strip in two. Gaza medical officials said Sunday that 17 Palestinians were killed in the early hours of the offensive. Israel reported 30 of its soldiers had been injured, including two severely.
