Unemployment in the construction industry climbed in 25 states, including Illinois, between April and May, and in most of the country over the past 12 months.
Few states witnessed more construction job losses than Illinois, where 6,500 jobs were lost between April and May and more than 25,000 position were cut from May 2009 and May 2010, according to recent statistics from the Associated General Contractors of America.
Chief economist Ken Simonson said most Illinois home builders have witnessed a downturn in the Chicago area, where many projects have been halted and remain unfinished or have yet to get started. Commercial construction of office, retail and warehousing has also declined, and the nation's economy plus Illinois' $13 billion deficit only amplify the problem.
