Like any business, the ArtSpace Charter School has a wish-list of overdue repairs put off for lack of money.
The charter school near Asheville has found the money it needs -- about $16,000 -- in new energy conservation programs that didn't exist until just a few months ago. Progress Energy began offering to pay its business customers in the Carolinas up to 75 percent of the cost of making conservation upgrades.
ArtSpace's fortunate timing shows how quickly new energy-saving opportunities have opened up as conservation gets pushed to the front of the national agenda. The typical business, like the typical home, wastes energy each month, but most companies have lacked the money to improve efficiency.
