Tribe hopeful its long wait for dam payment will end

For President Truman, Washington state’s Grand Coulee Dam helped end World War II by powering the Hanford nuclear plant, which provided the plutonium used to bomb Nagasaki. For the Spokane Tribe, the dam’s construction brought only hardship: an end to the salmon runs that had fed the tribe for centuries, the loss of homes, flooding. Now the tribe finally may get $53 million for its past suffering.
