BP begins 'static kill' of its Deepwater Horizon well

BP said it began pumping the heavy drilling mud at 4 p.m. EDT to begin the "static kill" of the well that for 87 days spewed an estimated 4.9 million barrels into the Gulf of Mexico. BP hopes the drilling mud will force oil now in the well back into the reservoir. If the effort is successful, BP will dump cement into the well to seal it permanently.
