After a couple of terrifying flights on an air carrier I won't name with a big hub in Charlotte, my family and I decided this past summer to travel to New York City by train.
Since we weren't in a hurry, it was fun and relaxing. But it could have been -- and should be -- a better experience. Our train ran hours late, much of the way on old, rough rail. The air conditioning was shot, and the toilet stopped up.
Why, I wondered, do our governments skimp on train infrastructure while lavishing billions of tax dollars every year on highways and airports?
