The Rev. Garth Thompson hadn't yet written his Christmas sermon.
He saw no reason to start early, though it was to be delivered not Christmas Day but the Sunday prior. He'd get it done. In his 34 years at the Miami Beach Community Church -- that's 1,768 Sundays, give or take -- he has never once run into writer's block.
Besides, he had already thought of a title: The Stable is Stable, which was pretty good, definitely up there with O Holey Knight and We Have No Joseph!, inspirations from previous years.
''My idea is that innocence and family and home, all those things, are stable things that sustain us,'' Thompson said on a recent morning. ``They are the substantial things which will support us and bless us, if we give ourselves to those things.''
