A YouTube video picked up a woman's ominous comment as she watched a manatee swim in the water near downtown Manteo, N.C.
"He can’t be in these waters," the woman says.
On Sunday, the manatee, which had been seen swimming around Manteo for the past month, was reportedly found dead in the Alligator River. The water temperature had fallen to 55 degrees — too cold for the endangered sea creature that should have been in Florida this time of year.
"It was a sad ending to a big story," said Carl Jordan, Manteo's dock master.
The story began a month ago. That's when a couple from Florida saw a creature swimming near the Marshes Light condos in downtown Manteo.
