Officials hoped Kipenzi, an eastern black rhinoceros from the Kansas City Zoo, would successfully mate to produce more of her critically endangered species once she arrived at the Oregon Zoo.
But the 8-year-old rhino died Monday night after apparently falling ill in her crate on the way there.
“This is truly a devastating loss,” Kansas City Zoo director Randy Wisthoff said. “We are so committed to black rhino reproduction ... losing one to any reason is something that upsets us greatly.”
