While dress codes can be controversial, they are increasingly common at entertainment venues. Many people endorse their goal of creating an atmosphere in which visitors feel safe and comfortable.
It's how those rules are applied and perceived that’s the rub.
"When you’re implementing a dress-code strategy for business purposes, it's important you're not using them to discriminate against individuals who should have a right to come to that particular venue," said Susan Wilson, associate dean for cultural enhancement and diversity at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine.
