A 13-year-old died Thursday after he was twice tied to a tree overnight for disobeying his parents, the sheriff in Edgecombe County, N.C., said Friday. The boy's father and stepmother were charged with first-degree murder and felony child abuse and were being held without bail.
Rescue workers found the boy Thursday afternoon at 1110 Felton Farm Road in Macclesfield and called deputies, Sheriff James L. Knight said. Knight would not release the boy's name.
Brice McMillan, the child's father, told deputies that the boy had been disobedient on Tuesday and had been tied to a tree in the family's yard overnight. On Wednesday morning, the ties were cut and the boy was allowed back in the house. But Wednesday night, the boy continued to misbehave and was again tied to the tree, where he remained until his stepmother found him unresponsive about 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
