Alaska greets polar bear designation with anger, angst

To the rest of the country, polar bears may be grand beasts deserving of protection as global warming melts the ice floes they depend on. But to many in Alaska, their designation as an endangered species is a threat to economic development. Republican Sen. Ted Stevens called it "an unequivocal victory for extreme environmentalists who want to block all development in our state."
