A burglar learned the hard way that a grandma armed with a cane can be a formidable foe.
Fairview Heights police on Monday received a call about a residential burglary in progress about 11 a.m. in the 200 block of Union Hill Road. The elderly victim said she had just arrived home in the company of a friend, when they noticed an unfamiliar car parked near the home. They then noticed someone had broken into the home and called 911.
While they were on the phone, a man left the house and both women confronted him. He struggled with one of the women and attempted to take her cell phone while she was using it to call the police.
The other woman began beating the burglar with her cane until he stopped attacking her friend. Both women are older than 70, according to Fairview Heights Police Detective Tim Mueller.
The suspect took off.
