New jobs numbers suggest economy is in free fall

December's unemployment rate leapt half a percentage point to 7.2 percent, the highest it's been since January 1993. Other numbers added to the worry: The average number of hours worked was the lowest on record, an indication of trouble ahead; employers first cut hours before they decide to cut the job itself.
