The daily Iraq violence report is compiled by McClatchy Newspapers Special Correspondents in Baghdad from police, military and medical reports. This is not a comprehensive list of all violence in Iraq, much of which goes unreported. It's posted without editing as transmitted to McClatchy's Washington Bureau.

Baghdad

A mortar round hit the Green Zone at 5 a.m. Monday. No casualties were reported.

Gunmen in a speeding car shot dead Abdulhussein Muhsin al Kathimi, Brigadier General in the Traffic Police in Sadoun Street, central Baghdad at 6.15 a.m. Monday.

A roadside bomb targeted the Head of Sahwa in Taji area, northern Baghdad killing him and injuring two civilians who were with him in the car. Some reports said that they were his sons but Iraqi Police did not confirm it.

Five U.S. soldiers were killed by gunfire at Camp Liberty in Baghdad at approximately 2 p.m. said a U.S. military spokesman on Monday. A U.S. Soldier suspected of being involved with the shootings is currently in custody, the press released added.

Nineveh

Gunmen on foot opened fire upon the guards of the Governorate building in Ghazi Street, central Mosul Monday morning killing one guard and injuring another while they were on duty.

A police patrol found the body of a five year old boy who was kidnapped 10 days ago from Shikhan, to the north of Mosul. There was evidence of strangulation. The kidnappers called with a demand of 50 thousand USD but did not make contact again.

- Around noon gunmen assassinated Arkan Aziz Al-Ta’ee, a former officer in the Iraqi army and a recent candidate of the Hadbaa list which won the elections in Nineveh, at his house in Muthana neighborhood in eastern Mosul on Monday.

- Gunmen killed a policeman in Suq Al-Maash neighborhood in Mosul while he was in his off-duty.

Kirkuk

- Around 7 p.m. a parked car bomb detonated in Al-Askari neighborhood in southern Kirkuk targeting a police patrol on Monday. Two people were killed; an old man and a kid, and eight others were wounded including five policemen.
