A car bomb parked near the eastern entrance to the city, Bab Twaireej, detonated at 8.30 a.m. Monday, targeting a coach carrying Iranian pilgrims on their way to the holy city of Karbala. The explosion caused the death of 14 people, five of whom were Iranian pilgrims and injured another 40, most of whom were Iranian pilgrims.

A car bomb parked in a car park in central Najaf (about 700m from the holy shrine) detonated at 1.15 p.m. Monday, targeting coaches of Iranian pilgrims. The explosion killed eight civilians, including two Iranian pilgrims, and injured 21 civilians many of whom were also Iranian pilgrims, but included four primary-school boys returning home from school, said security authorities. An armed group in a black SUV with shaded windows parked by Lady of Salvation church in central Baghdad and engaged its guards killing two and injuring four civilians. Another vehicle joined it and they broke into the church where evening mass was being held. Security forces arrived a while later and surrounded the church and broke in in spite of the many hostages held by the armed group, fought a battle inside the church during which 52 were killed, including seven security servicemen and 64 were injured including 15 security servicemen, according to a source in the interior ministry. Eye witnesses said that the toll may be higher.

Four home made bombs went off in Ishreen Street, the main commercial street in Bayaa neighbourhood, southwest Baghdad, Thursday morning. Police authorities said that this was to draw the attention of the security forces while a gang of more than ten people robbed a nearby bank. However, the guards at the bank shuttered the bank entrance as soon as the first explosion went off.
