Sugar company proposes cleaner power plant in Idaho

Amalgamated Sugar Co. hopes a proposed a natural-gas-fired, combined heat and power plant can helps its business, produce power for 58,000 homes and reduce air pollution.
The company is using part of a $350,000 stimulus grant obtained through Idaho's Office of Energy Resources to study the feasibility of the project at Amalgamated’s Nampa plant.The project will simultaneously produce electricity for Idaho Power and steam for Amalgamated’s sugar beet processing.
Idaho Power intends to incorporate results of the feasibility study in its Integrated Resource Planning process, which determines what resources it will use in its portfolio for power generation over the next 20 years. Amagamated initially expects to increase its energy efficiency by 45 percent when it replaces its current coal-fired boiler.
