Alvin Barefoot cradled his tiny daughter Thursday and waited for news about receiving unemployment benefits and retraining classes during his layoff from ArcelorMittal Steel in Georgetown.

Barefoot joined about 50 other mill employees who have been left without work for an undetermined amount of time since the mill's production has slumped.

While benefits and retraining are available to the workers, the employees said they would rather have the overall economy take an upturn and production take a spike upward at the mill.
