McCain pounds Obama on taxes in Missouri stops

John McCain kept using the word "if."
"I'll tell you over and over and over again," McCain said Monday afternoon on the football field at Heartland High School and Academy in Belton. "If I'm elected president, I won't raise taxes on anyone, especially small businesses."
The crowd of 6,000 was having none of it. "When!" they shouted. "When!" McCain got their message.
"When I'm elected president…" he began again, stopping as the crowd erupted and drowned out his voice.
"John McCain! John McCain! John McCain!" they yelled, separating his name into two distinct syllables "Ma-Cain."
Monday, in a Missouri swing that took him from St. Louis to Columbia and then to Belton, was pound-Barack-Obama-on-taxes day, and McCain wielded a sledgehammer. He said his Democratic rival’s tax policies would doom the nation.
"Senator Obama wants to raise taxes and restrict trade," McCain said. "My friends, the last time America did that in a bad economy, it led to the Great Depression.
"Those who don’t learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them. Well, my friends, I know my history lessons, and I won’t make the mistakes that Senator Obama seeks to repeat."
Obama's camp shot back that the senator from Illinois wants to cut taxes for 95 percent of working families and 98 percent of small businesses.
