DES MOINES, Iowa — Here's a sampling of quotes from presidential candidates and others Thursday night as Iowa's voting results emerged:

Illinois Sen. Barack Obama: "They said this day would never come. They said our sights were just too high. They said this country was too divided, too disillusioned to ever come together around a common purpose. But on this January night, at this defining moment in history, you have done what the cynics said we couldn't do."

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee: "People really are more important than the purse. Tonight, we proved that American politics is still in the hands of ordinary folks like you and across this country who believed that it wasn't about who raised the most money, but who raised the hopes, dreams and aspirations for our children and their future."

New York Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton: "This is a great night for Democrats. We have seen an unprecedented turnout here in Iowa, and that is good news. Today we are sending a clear message that we are going to have change and that change will be a Democratic president in the White House in 2009."

Former North Carolina Democratic Sen. John Edwards: "One thing is clear from the results in Iowa tonight — the status quo lost and change won."

Patti Solis Doyle, campaign manager for Clinton: "This race begins tonight and ends when Democrats throughout America have their say. Our campaign was built for a marathon, and we have the resources to run a national race in the weeks ahead."

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, on CNN: "We did not put a lot of effort into Iowa. We had to spread out our efforts. And we try to do a proportionate campaign in 29 states. So it didn't allow us to use a lot of our resources there."
