Cost of cancellations in the tens of millions, AA CEO says
American Airlines' chief executive, Gerard Arpey, said Thursday that the cancellation of 2,500 flights so that its fleet of MD-80 aircraft could be inspected probably cost the airline tens of millions of dollars.
The airline estimates that another 570 flights will be canceled on Friday.
Arpey wasn't critical of the Federal Aviation Administration for ordering the planes grounded for a new round of inspections, and took personal responsbility for the airline's failure to "complete this airworthiness directive to the precise standards of the FAA."
