Adam Baron is a freelance journalist based in Sanaa, Yemen who reports regularly for McClatchy Newspapers.
Born and raised in Baltimore, he graduated from Williams College with a dual degree in Arab Studies and Religion. He has been based in Sanaa since January 2011.
His writing has also appeared in other outlets including the Christian Science Monitor, the Daily Telegraph, Foreign Policy, the Nation and Sports Illustrated.
From the moment Yemeni journalist Abdulelah Haider Shaye was sentenced to five years in prison in 2011 for allegedly supporting al Qaida’s Yemen-based affiliate, his punishment has been controversial – and not just because it represented the jailing of a respected writer and the trial was widely condemned as a sham by groups such as Amnesty International and the Committee to Protect Journalists.
