Senate Mississippi Cochran

May 14, 2014 - Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss., arriving for a vote on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C.

The Republican party’s Senate campaign arm is mobilizing on behalf of Sen. Thad Cochran, as Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell is urging supporters to come to a fundraiser for the Mississippi senator Tuesday.

Cochran, a six term veteran, is vying with State Sen. Chris McDaniel in a runoff primary June 24. McDaniel is expected to have strong support from conservative groups, who before the first June 3 primary spent an estimated $5 million to push his candidacy.

But in Washington, the National Republican Senatorial Committee is firmly behind Cochran, and McConnell is urging people to attend the fundraiser.

“The NRSC has two functions, to support Republican Senators and to build a Republican majority, which is why we fully and completely support Thad Cochran,” the committee said Friday.

The fundraiser will be held at NRSC headquarters in Washington, and is expected to attract a strong lineup of Republican colleagues.
