Obama, Biden head for Md. Eastern Shore & Democratic retreat

McClatchy Washington BureauFebruary 14, 2014

President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden are slated to speak and take questions from House Democrats later Friday.

They're heading to the Democrats' retreat in Cambridge, Md., where it snowed and sleeted overnight--and the roads are encrusted in ice.

The city, or at least the part near a resort where the event is being held, is suddenly full of security vehicles and long lines at left turn signals waiting to be cleared.

Obama and Biden are scheduled to renew their push for a higher minimum wage as well as extending jobless benefits for the longer-term unemployed.

Thursday, House Democrats said they would take the unusual step of starting a "discharge petition" to bring the minimum wage up for a House vote. Their odds of success aren't good, since Democrats have 200 seats and 217 are needed.
