State police are investigating an assault on Medal of Honor recipient Dakota Meyer.

Meyer was involved in an incident over the weekend in which he was the victim of an assault, said Trooper Billy Gregory, spokesman for the Columbia state police post.

The altercation reportedly took place late Saturday or early Sunday at a venue about four miles outside Columbia.

Few details of the incident have been publicly available so far.

State police have leads in the case, but no arrests have been made and it is not known if there will be arrests, Gregory said.

Meyer was a 21-year-old Marine corporal when members of his team were ambushed by Taliban fighters at a village in Afghanistan in September 2009.

Meyer disobeyed orders against entering the fight and braved intense fire to rescue U.S. and Afghan troops, according to the Marine Corps account of the battle.

Meyer's efforts saved the lives of 36 soldiers, the Marine Corps said.

President Barack Obama awarded Meyer the Medal of Honor last year. He was the first living Marine to receive the award in nearly four decades.
