New Illinois law prohibits trashing electronics

Starting Sunday, it'll no longer be legal for Illinois residents to throw away electronics with other trash.

Beginning Jan. 1, under a new state law aimed at keeping the electronics and contaminants they contain out of landfills, consumers must recycle them with an entity registered with the state to handle electronics recycling.

According to a news release from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, a report showed that electronics were the fastest growing item in solid waste collections. In 2007, only 14 percent of the 3 million tons of electronics that became obsolete were recycled. Metals inside the electronics can threaten groundwater if placed in a landfill.
