U.S. Army Capt. William Swenson, of Seattle, calls for air support on his radio as he and his men came under fire. The force was going to the village of Ganjgal in eastern Kunar province, Afghanistan, to search for weapons and hold talks with the elders who'd agreed to accept the authority of the local government. Four U.S. service members and 10 Afghans were killed in what was certainly a carefully laid trap. A fifth American died later from his wounds. (Jonathan S. Landay/MCT) (/Jonathan S. Landay / MCT)
