Criminal charges were filed Wednesday morning against the stepfather of a 6-year-old girl who was accidentally shot and killed by her 2-year-old half brother May 29 in northeast Fresno.

Jarred Dubois, 33, faces charges of first-degree criminal storage of a firearm. If convicted, Dubois could face penalties ranging from probation to three years in prison.

Dubois' son found the loaded and unsecured .45-caliber handgun under his father's bed at a home in the 8500 block of North Boyd Avenue, according to an affidavit filed by Fresno police.

The boy took the weapon into a room where other children were playing and shot Emily Lavender in the chest, according to authorities.
