April tritium release from nuclear reactor still not measured

Federal inspectors were at the Grand Gulf nuclear power plant near Port Gibson on Monday to assess a radioactive spill that occurred late last month.

Workers at Grand Gulf pumped water containing tritium, a low-level radioactive material, into the Mississippi River for days before they realized it and shut off the pumps.

A spokeswoman for the plant, Suzanne Anderson, said they reported the release to the state Health Department and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on April 29. But they do not know how much radioactive water was pumped from the plant or the amount that was in the water. She also said they are still trying to determine the source of the tritium
