More on this Story

THE ISSUE: Assembly Bill 376 by Paul Fong, D-Cupertino, and Jared Huffman, D-San Rafael, would ban possession or sale of shark fins in California. Supporters say "finning" of sharks is depleting the population of the sea's predators, threatening the ocean's complex ecosystem. But shark fin soup is a Chinese delicacy, and Sen. Leland Yee, D-San Francisco, and others say a ban is a thinly veiled attack on Asians.
