'Love recession' hits Fresno, Calif., Las Vegas weddings

There was a marriage recession of sorts at the Fresno County Clerk's office on Valentine's Day, where fewer couples than usual came to tie the knot on the traditional day of love.

The man in charge of those civil unions says the economy is to blame.

There usually is a line out the door on Valentine's Day, but there were no couples waiting Monday morning when the office opened. By the end of the day, about 50 weddings were performed in the downtown office.

County Clerk Victor Salazar said that was fewer than in past years, when they've had upwards of 100.

Salazar said in those years, when he had a bigger staff and before county budget cuts, he would promote Valentine's Day weddings by bringing in Fresno's mayor or police chief to perform weddings. Not this year.
