Round-up of daily Violence in Iraq - Friday 1 September, 2010

The daily Iraq violence report is compiled by McClatchy Newspapers Special Correspondents in Baghdad from police, military and medical reports. This is not a comprehensive list of all violence in Iraq, much of which goes unreported. It's posted without editing as transmitted to McClatchy's Washington Bureau.

Baghdad

A roadside bomb targeted a Sahwa checkpoint near Sa'doun Mosque in Dora neighbourhood, south Baghdad, at 12 p.m. - the time for Friday prayers. The explosion killed one Sahwa member and two worshippers and injured two Sahwa members and five worshippers.

A magnetic bomb that was stuck to a civilian car detonated as the owner was parking in front of his house in Ameriyah neighbourhood, west Baghdad, late Thursday. The owner was seriously injured.

A roadside bomb targeted civilians in front of a famous sweets shop in Rabee Street, Jami'a neighbourhood, west Baghdad, Thursday afternoon. The explosion caused extensive damages to the shop. There were human casualties, according to eyewitnesses, but the security authorities did not release any official casualties report.

A roadside bomb targeted one of the vehicles of the chief of inter-city police, Brig. Gen. Mohammed, in New Baghdad, east Baghdad, at 2 p.m. Thursday. The senior officer was not in the targeted car, but in another, and so was spared. The explosion seriously injured one of his security guards.

Armed men on a motor-bike opened fire upon a civilian car carrying three civilians in Camp Sara, southeast Baghdad, Thursday, killing one and seriously injuring the other two.

Four home made bombs went off in Ishreen Street, the main commercial street in Bayaa neighbourhood, southwest Baghdad, Thursday morning. Police authorities said that this was to draw the attention of the security forces while a gang of more than ten people robbed a nearby bank. However, the guards at the bank shuttered the bank entrance as soon as the first explosion went off. And armed confrontations between the armed men and the security force ensued, in which two policemen were killed and three civilians were injured.

Diyala

Several stun-bombs (that create a really loud bang with very small destructive action) went off in al Khaylani area in Muqdadiyah, 36 km to the east of Baquba, Thursday, without any casualties.

Babil

Several mortar rounds targeted a military base in Hilla, the capital of the province, Thursday, but some fell short and slammed into a residential area injuring one man and two women, one over eighty, who's leg in injured, and the other, 66 got shrapnel embedded in her neck.

Nineveh

Armed men opened fire upon a police checkpoint in Bab al Toob neighbourhood, central Mosul, Friday, killing one policeman.

A roadside bomb targeted an army foot patrol in Sumer neighbourhood, south Mosul, Friday, killing one soldier.
