The Miami Herald took first place in three categories and The State of Columbia, S.C. won as well at the 60th Annual Green Eyeshade Awards, which recognize journalism excellence in 11 southern states.

Miami Herald television critic Glenn Garvin won first place for his work in print criticism.

The 2009 series "After Guantanamo" by Miami Herald journalists Carol Rosenberg, John VanBeekum and Marco Ruiz, won first place in two categories: specialized reporting online and best of online journalism.

The stories took readers to Charleston, S.C., and the prison camps at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to look at anxiety and preparations in light of President Barack Obama's executive order to empty the controversial prison camps by Jan. 22, 2010, a deadline that wasn't met in part because of the domestic anxiety described in the series.

The staff of The State won in the breaking news category for its reporting on steamy e-mails between Gov. Mark Sanford and his Argentine mistress.

Journalists working in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia are eligible for the awards.
