'You lie!' House race to go down as South Carolina's richest

email this story print this story jump to comments

U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson and his Democratic opponent, Beaufort small businessman Rob Miller, each have about $1.7 million in cash three and a half months before the Nov. 2 general election, according to the latest quarterly campaign filings.

U.S. Rep. John Spratt, D-York, holds a nearly three-to-one cash advantage over his Republican opponent, state Sen. Mick Mulvaney, R-Lancaster.

Wilson and Spratt are the two S.C. congressmen expected to have the stiffest general election challenges.

Wilson had established a wide fundraising advantage over Miller after yelling "you lie" at President Obama last year during a nationally televised joint session of Congress. Wilson also became a target for national Democrats, which allowed Miller to acquire a wide, national fundraising base. With more than $3 million raised between Wilson and Miller, the race for the 2nd Congressional District will be the richest in S.C. history.

One reason Miller and Wilson are even is Wilson’s spending. Wilson drew token opposition for the June 8 primary — which he won with more than 80 percent of the vote — and he has been spending money on TV advertising and campaign staff.
