WICHITA, Kan. — Whoever was dreaming of a white spring had their dream come true.

People in Wichita and across most of Kansas and much of Oklahoma started the season Saturday with snow on the ground, slick roads, some delays on flights to Chicago and a winter storm warning in effect.

Areas in southeast Kansas -- including Eureka, Chanute and Coffeyville -- can expect 6 to 10 inches by early Sunday morning, said Mary-Beth Schreck, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Wichita.

Winds gusting at up to 35 mph should keep the day largely unpleasant. But forecasters with the National Weather Service predict temperatures in the mid-40s Sunday, so much of the snow will probably melt.

Oklahoma City received an inch of snow, but parts of east and northeast Oklahoma received more. The Daily Oklahoman Web site reported snowfalls of reported snowfall between 5 and 6 inches in Osage County, quoting the National Weather Service.

Light snow and gusty winds are expected to continue in central and eastern Oklahoma through Sunday, the service said. Throughout Saturday afternoon light snow accumulations are expected in southern and western Oklahoma, according to the newspaper.
