NEW BADEN -- The last time Jeff Mavrogeorge had a turkey in his house, it was surrounded by mashed potatoes, corn and cranberry sauce.

On March 6 after a 20-pound wild turkey crashed through the front window of Mavrogeorge's New Baden home, broken glass and children's toys surrounded the stunned gobbler as it flapped around on the carpet in his living room.

"It looked like a bomb went off," Mavrogeorge said. "There wasn't a spec of floor that was not covered in glass. It was in the furniture, on the table and toys. There was glass everywhere."

And standing in the middle of the mess was one bewildered bird.

Mavrogeorge has dealt with numerous break-ins during his six years as a police officer in the village of New Baden. Never, though, has he responded to the kind of call he got from his panicked wife, Lisa, at 7:45 a.m. that Saturday morning.

"They didn't have that class in the police academy on how to remove a wild turkey from a house," said Mavrogeorge, who had started his shift at 6 a.m.
