Lester Cepero told detectives six years ago that gunmen beat him and left him in a field south of Miami before they took Francisco Fernandez to Palm Beach County and executed him.

Cepero lied, authorities now say.

The 39-year-old Hialeah man, a suspected drug merchant and a reported high priest of Santeria, is being held without bond in the Palm Beach County Jail, charged with Fernandez's Feb. 10, 2004, murder west of Delray Beach.
