Lynden-area residents Sam and Edie Menzies own a building materials business in Surrey, B.C., so Sam is frequently crossing the U.S.-Canada border.

But he knew the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics were coming up, and that would mean longer border delays and congested roads in B.C. How does he plan to deal with it?

By going to Hawaii, of course.

Regular border crossers will have to cope with more traffic at the borders during the Olympics. Federal officials estimate February traffic, normally the slowest of the year, will look more like an August day, the busiest time of the year. Area residents have different strategies for the traffic generated by the games.

"I just didn't want to have to deal with it," Sam Menzies said by phone from Maui. "I figured if I'm not there, that's just one less person to have to work the system."
