A warning for lead-footed motorists: A new Georgia law that aims to put the brakes on super speeders will go into effect Jan. 1.
Georgia House Bill 160, dubbed the "Super Speeder Law," is designed to decrease the number of speed-related crashes, injuries and fatalities statewide by slapping offenders with additional penalties.
Under the new law, motorists traveling 75 mph or more on any two-lane road or 85 mph or more anywhere in Georgia will be classified as super speeders and required to pay a $200 state fine in addition to the jurisdictional penalty assessed by the ticketing officer.
Failure to pay the $200 fine will result in an additional $50 penalty and the offender’s driving privileges and license will be suspended.
Fees collected under the Super Speeders Law will be used to help fund Georgia's trauma care hospital system, where approximately 60 percent of all trauma care patients are crash-related.
